history: Since the first spanish horses escaped in the Americas 400 or more years ago, Kahuna's ancestors have been wild. Descended from the early escapees, he was born and bred in an isolated rocky desert, where the days had searing temperatures and the nights were frozen. Humans had never come there, and the last time an outside horse came was 60 years ago. Life was tough, and only the strongest survived, keeping the line extremely hardy.
Kahuna's father was a proud old horse. He was stern at best, and downright cruel at worst. He brought up his sons with the expectation that they learn their place in life and deal with themselves. Colts were driven out at early ages; if they were weak, he couldn't stand the sight of them, and if they were strong he thought that they needed to prove themselves. From his father, Kahuna learned to be tough and take nothing for granted, but work hard for all he got. He had deeply resented his father, but soon grudgingly acknowledged the benefits of his strict upbringing when he was turned out to a bachelor's herd. He quickly drove his fellows away because he outmatched them too much. Alone, he wandered his desert hme, picking fights with stallions to gain experience. Competition was extreme, and the older stallions never once gave in. But he learned and grew stronger. Eventually, he won a mare, a beautiful filly he had grown up with.
The downfall of the desert herds could be seen coming: nature's forces were relentless on the herds, and over the years they had slowly dwindled. One day, the unthinkable happened: humans came. Over half of the horses were rounded up and captured. His father, too proud and fierce to let himself be captured, ran himself to death. Then, a mysterious disease plagued the remaining horses; brought in by the humans horses, who were immune to it, but the wild ones had never been exposed to it and succumbed quickly. Kahuna watched life collapse around him. The worst blow was when his beloved mare fell ill; her death was the most painful thing he had been through. In one day, he lost his mate, his unborn foal, everything he had lived for. There was nothing here for him anymore. He left.
Sunshine River Valley had always been a children's tale where he was from. How could there exist such a place, where food was plentiful and humans didn't come? But Kahuna figured that since his father wasn't around to scorn him, and since he didn't know where he was going, he would see if the legend was true.

When he first arrived, Kahuna was shunned by others for his rough, unrefined ways. A stranger, an outsider. Confusion over what was right overwhelmed him- to be himself, or what others told him to be? He was giving up hope. Then, one mare gave him the chance he needed. Rose Dancer joined him, and he learned that love need not be concentrated on just one mare, his lost heart in the old lands, but that he could move on and open his heart to others. Faust became a part of his growing herd as well, and these two were his most loyal mares. Others, such as Bullet Sensation and Savannah, joined later as well.
To his great shock and joy, one morning Serena came: the mare he had taken for dead, long ago. But his elation quickly faded. A late winter storm scattered his herd. Savannah, Bullet, and, most agonizing, Rose and Faust, vanished. Only Serena was left. It was a long and lonely year for the pair.
Then, several seasons later, Faust returned, to Kahuna's great joy. She soon gave birth to their son, Royale, who even at a young age showed clear signs of future greatness. Faust's shy sister Dulcimer joined the herd as well. A traveling herd, led by the stallion Ace, passed through the territory and stayed for a while. One of the mares who wandered with him, Travelling Rose, was a truly wild thing, just as Faust and his other mares were. Rose decided to join the herd, more comfortable there among those who were like herself.
Again, the herd changed. Faust disappeared and returned; Dulcimer and Rose were killed by a predator. Royale vanished but came back, together with Kahuna's granddaughter Thunderstorm, as well as Karatuch. The steadfast roan also found a few new mares, Eirene and Halo. Despite the shifts in his herd, losses and deaths, he remained the ruler of his territory, ever strong.
