Briony walked slowly into her favourite part of the oasis, knowing that the foal would come soon. She was afraid of the birthing, but knew she would survive; she was a strong mare. She needed to find a place that was out-of-the-way yet not to far away, otherwise Artax would worry if he couldn't find her. She found a place, beside a small pool, that was warm and comfortable, but not so hidden that Artax or Kalari couldn't find her if need be. She settled down on the dry grasses with a grunt; she still wasn't used to the weight and extra strain being with foal brought with it. She moved around, getting comfortable. And not a moment too soon! She felt the foal coming and was momentarily frightened; but she pushed it to the back of her mind, she couldn't afford to be frightened right now! She needed to concentrate on bringing this foal into the world, for her and for Artax. It was her first foal, and she was glad that she wouldn't be alone to rear it, for she had Kalari to help her if she needed it. She lay there, lathered in sweat, pushing and straining for a good half hour before her foal emerged in a rush of fluids. Her head flopped back onto the grass; she was exhausted! Finally she had the strength to turn and see her foal. It was a colt; she saw that almost immediately. She started licking him clean and as she did so, a handsome palomino coat and the tell-tale Arabian dished face emerged from under all that glop. He opened his eyes and gazed at her; he had beautiful brown eyes! 'I shall call you;' She paused, thinking. 'I shall call you Brior, for the green beauty of this place and for your future; for you will need to be as quick and as sharp as thorns to survive.' She stood up, and urged him up. She didn't have to be back until tomorrow; Any longer and Artax would worry. She urged Brior to suckle, then let him lay to sleep. She lay beside him, away from the mess from the foaling, and curled around him, protecting him from the cold.
Next morning - Briony
Briony woke up to a beautiful morning, and gently nudged the colt called Brior out of sleep. 'Come, my dear son, we must get moving if we are to meet Artax by noon.' She let him suckle, and practice walking while she drank and ate some of the nearby grass. She then set off, Brior in tow, across the desert to meet Artax, and to introduce him to their beautiful foal.
Brior
He woke to the sound and touch of his mother, waking him, readying him for the long day ahead. He suckled and practiced walking while his mother fed. He could stay up for longer now; he gave a little jump, excited to be moving, a bit apprehensive about meeting his father, but excited nonetheless. He heard his mother calling him, telling him to follow her closely, as the desert can be dangerous. He set off after her, on the move at last.
