Cochise's nervous eyes widened. He gave a terrified glance at Cougar. "Wh-who are they?" he said shakily. There had been many equines to begin with, and now even more were showing up. That alone was bad enough, but then some stallion came asking for him! He shoved closer to Cougar, feeling both betrayed by the mule- he had undoubtedly been talking about him- and in extreme need of his comfort.
For an instant, the mule hesitated, feeling a sudden compulsion to tell Cochise about his own impending death, and why these introductions were necessary. No point in breaking his heart if it can be postponed, he thought, twitching one of his long ears uneasily. He lowered his whiskered muzzle and gave the colt a gentle shove. "They're not gonna eat ye, kid. Introduce yerself, don' be rude."
Trembling all over, the skittish pinto took one tiny step towards the stranger, Artemus, his eyes flicking from that other mare, Celeris, to Cloud Cap and Blue Wings and then back to Cougar and Blessed Waters. But the roan seemed just as unsure as he was, and the otehrs weren't about to stop him apparently. In a tiny, high-pitched voice, he lowered his head shyly and answered, "I-I am. C-C-Cochise, I m-mean." Had he been human, he would be blushing furiously. As it was, he felt completely vulnerable out in the middle of things like this. He could see none of the horses on his right side, nothing at all, and it was spooky. Even creepier was Artemus- he wasn't looking directly at Cochise, and was completely odd. The colt swallowed, and backed submissively towards Cougar again. He was at the bottom of this pecking order, and he knew it.
Cougar sighed. The colt wouldn't last a month when the mule was gone. It was bad enough with his physical handicaps, but he was terrified of everything and anything that moved, and quite a few that didn't. The weakest foal could boss him around, and he had absolutely zero self-confidence. "Well, now we're all introduced," he said loudly. H
