It's quiet. Too quiet.

The sun blazed overhead, but the water of the little pond was cool and refreshing; normally the area would be full of life, horses and other animals coming to quench their thirst and gain a reprieve from the summer heat. At the moment, however, only a lonely painted stallion stood in the shallows, sipping quietly. He stood out, completely white save for the chestnut flanks, chest shield, and medicine hat markings; but in personality Sunchaser was in fact quite a mild fellow, not one to call attention to himself. Still, he enjoyed the company of others. Solitude didn't normally bother him, but it was always nice to have someone to talk to.
And besides... something about this situation made him uneasy. The birds twittered and screeched per usual in the trees, and he had spotted a squirrel earlier. But the wind had completely died for several days now, and the lands seemed... empty, somehow. He had befriended several herds here over the years, yet now when he had wandered through the territories on his travels, they were eerily silent. He had been unable to find any trace of what might have happened, either. To be sure, it could have been a coincidence, and he simply had missed them- an easy thing to do in a large territory. But Sunchaser was a great believer in omens and things of that nature, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. Even the warlords who had for a time threatened to overtake the lands had seemingly vanished. What did it mean? Was this a time of quiet rebirth, for new fledgling herds to grow and old ones to return to the lands they had been frightened away from by war? Or was it the calm before a great and deadly storm?
The stallion had no herd of his own to defend, and had never been interested in leading one; but he loved these lands as much as anyone else, and loved the friends he had made over the years. For now, he would simply have to wait and see what happened, but he desperately hoped this feeling of foreboding was just a minor case of paranoia.
Snorting softly, Sunchaser lowered his muzzle to the water again, sipping at his leisure. It was a beautiful day, despite the heat and the lack of wind; perhaps he would stumble across someone who had news or simply company to share. The watering hole was an attractive location for all wildlife- if he were to meet someone, surely it would be here.
