Pageant in 'Swahili'
History:
“Come along, Kuma,” the palomino mare said, smiling at her daughter. Kuma smiled up at her mother Avri; hoping that one day she’d grow to be like her. Her mother was bold, sweet, and was easy to be around. She was also good at taking care of herself, which she admired greatly.
Kuma stopped along the rocks, her ears swiveling back and forth, “Mamma, I think I heard something.” She said, pressing herself against her mothers side as she caught back up. Avri smiled, “I’m sure it was nothing dear, we’ll be down the mountain soon and then-“ she was cut short by the unmistakable growl of a cougar. The giant cat lunged forward onto it’s nearest and most least threatening target, Kuma. Kuma whinnied and was taken to the ground by the cougars massive wait, it’s claws clinging to the foals shoulder. Avri reared up in desperation for her foal, and came crashing down on the Cougar’s back. “Run, Kuma!” Kuma rolled and stumbled to her hooves, watching with frightened eyes as the Cougar forgot about her and lunged onto her mothers back. She watched as the Cougar clawed her neck, staining a rock with blood splatter. “Run, Kuma!” Avri toppled onto her back, trying to crush the Cougar beneath her, but it was to quick and worked it’s way onto her stomach, where it bit into her viciously, causing Kuma to finally run. She tumbled down the mountain, finally to tired to carry herself on her little legs…
It was dawn and Kuma had been working her way back up the mountain, wondering why her mother hadn’t come back down the mountain the night before. She walked slowly, taking in all her surroundings, hoping that the Cougar had gone. As she made her way back to where they were, her tiny hooves were stepping in puddles of scarlet. She followed them until she saw her mother; the lifeless body that she willed to stand. “Momma, time to go…” she said, nudging the side of the mare, “Momma, I said it’s time to go…” Kuma looked up and down her mother’s body, not wanting to accept the broken-hearted truth. Her mother was missing flesh off of her hind legs, and her rib cage was exposed. A tear rolled down her cheek as she touched her nose to her mothers. “C-catch up w-with me, won’t you?” she said, turning her head and slowly walking away, hoping a miracle would pick her mother up and follow her down the mountain towards a new life.
