He was a large stallion, mostly white in color. In fact, he was nearly a draft horse. A chestnut colored stripe ran down his neck and back, marring his white coat. His name was Adept and he was new here. He had gathered a made, sired a foal, took in another made as well as a pony stallion. And then there was Chase. He wasn't sure what he was going to do with the nearly brain dead son of Orchid. But no, that would not bother him. He surveyed the land, it was neatly empty here. But that was what he wanted for a new foal. He nodded to himself and called out, laying a claim to this land.
Orchid, the tri color Gypsy mare, followed close behind her stallion. Her steps were slowed down by a lovely champagne and white spotted foal. The heavily haired mare was much happier here than she had been in the desert. She sighed softly aand smiled as Adept claimed the land proudly. She paused, letting her new filly nurse greedily at her side, her head dropping to graze on the grasses to regain the weight she had lost over winter. Her ears scanned behind her for Chase.
He nervously scooted behind his mother, flinching at every strange sound. Chase was certainly a different stallion than the brave foal that was here last time. His winter coat still clung to him in patches, his skin strung tight over his ribs and hip bones. He stopped beside his mother and new sister, grazing hungrily on the spring fed grasses. A large scar obliterated the right side of hhis head, including the eye, which was missing. Other large scars decorated his sides and back, but none as bad as the one on his head. He ignored the call of claiming and just grazed. Adept was not his real father and well, he didn't have to listen to him at all. Mother never made him listen to the new stallion.
On the way up the ridge, they had encountered a pony stallion, a mare, and a foal. Inviting them to his herd, Adept learned the names of his new herd members. Huckleberry, Harlow, and Firefly. They seemed lovely additions to his herd, but he allowed them to take their time heading up to the land he chose. He let loose another call, an invitation to any horses that were not herd bound. Yes, he was happy.
