This 'Task' Jeopardy now carried was already feeling more like a burdon than a easy join he'd first anticipated. He'd travelled right through winter, listening to the rumours and the hear-say from the other herds, the roaming bachelors. All in aid of finding Fire's Herd. His Sire's Nemesis. During his travels he'd grown into a young stallion, months of walking, fighting, surviving had added to his muscle tone. He'd followed wrong leads, ran into trouble more than once. But he was 'Here' wherever here was it wouldn't matter as long as Fire was also here, with his family. His daughters.
Truth be told he wanted to get this over and done with as soon as possible, He'd not left his mother alone this long since that beast attacked her when he was a weaning. Jeopardy convinced himself he wasn't a mamma's boy. But he didn't like leaving Peril for long, he was his and someone who would always need his protection, especially from his own sire. It would make his day if Peril could see the evil that ebbed from Hero. But the reality was she wouldn't not until he struck her or did a evil act in front of her.
On his travels he had a lot of time to contemplate things. One thing he focused on was his half-sister Risk. Peril had gone to those woods to find her brother, her brother wouldn't dare breed her, nor did she say she'd found him. Peril had only said she was lucky to survive. Jeopardy had asked how, but his Dam never gave a straight answer. He was told Fire also lived in that forest, could it have been his herd that saved his dam?
No that would be silly, Peril has always followed Hero like a sheep. she wouldn't bare offspring by Hero's enemy. and besides by the time Jeopardy had gone looking for Fire on those woodlands some younger stallions owned the territory. He remained faithful to the idea that Peril had been taken advantage of by a total stranger, a rogue in the right spot at the right time. But if he ever found that stranger, Jeopardy swore to kill him.
Jeopardy stood on a ridge, looking down onto a huge lake, In the lake rose a island, like half a turtles shell. He'd found the location of his latest lead. He looked behind himself, the sun had just broken the skyline, warming the chill air. Mist cowered back to the shadows and rivers. The clouds where still dull grey, beneath them the sun bleached them red and orange. Looking ahead again Jeopardy could see light clouds, raining fair off in the distance. A rainbow in the clouds had formed, a rare sight he only admired for a moment before pressing down the ridge. He intended to get to the lake before the sun burned all the mist away.
He reached the shore later than he'd expected, the woodlands were thicker than they looked on the ridge. It took a little navigating but he had made it. The mist's had all gone back to wherever it is it creeps from. He took a deep breath, then began to cross the water. He was close, he was sure of it, this wasn't like the other times he thought he'd found Fire. This time it felt more real. As he crossed he considered why. Fire a stallion on the run from Hero, Living on a Island inside a deep lake. His hair pricked, he could already be being watched.
He picked up his pace, on the islands shore he broke into a trot, he didn't want to get caught on the beach if he cold avoid it. Now on the island, he could see evidence of a herd, but was it 'The Herd?' as soon as he saw the lead he would know. Afterall he was hunting Smoke's son, he just needed to find a chestnut version of her.
