Opal was born on a cattle ranch a cross between the owner’s two horses. At first the owner wanted to sell her at a yearling sale, but his two children begged to keep her.
Opal grew into a quiet sensible mare, she throws her heart into everything she does and made friends readily with the other ranchers horses that she met even some mustangs who occasionally come near the corral. She loved her little children though and no matter how much the wild horses spoke about freedom she knew she would never leave them.
at age four the boy and girl who owned Opal took her out onto the range and trained her in an event called pole bending, their step-mother had brought up the subject of selling Opal again and the father told the children that unless they could give him a reason to keep her Opal would be sold.
That year Opal won many competitions and the children thought they had proven Opal’s worth. But as they came home one day they saw a man talking with their step mother and watched in horror as she agreed to sell the horse. The girl cried and cried, the boy got out Opal’s tack asking if they could go on one more ride. The man who had a daughter about the little girl’s age agreed and the pair mounted up.
Out of sight of the ranch the boy dismounted and got his little sister down as well. He took off Opal’s saddle and bridle and created what looked like wear damage.
“don’t worry sis” he told the girl “well say I was too upset to check the tack properly, Opal got spooked and ran off, when she finds her way home dad will let us keep her” then they began walking back.
But while she was out someone drove an atv loudly past her and Opal panicked. She never found her way back to the ranch. Instead she has now made her way to sunshine river.
