History:
Before her birth, the tabloids and magazines raved over the little appaloosa. Her mother was a star, a mare unlike any other the NRCHA had ever seen. She had speed, and agility, and a whole lot of 'pretty'. In her career she would surpass the million dollar mark and soar higher than most of her stallion competitors. Her bloodlines were the equivalent of equine royalty.
The season after her retirement she would be bred to an appaloosa stallion. Now, as I said the tabloids and magazines raved, some hailed that the foal would be destined for super-stardom the creation of a breeding genius; other however, vowed that the foal was a disgrace.
Sure enough the foal was born loud and proud. The spring sun seemed to set fire to the little chestnut's hide. She was pampered and cared for deeply. Her owner could not have been more excited with the result his famous mare had given him and he was determined for the filly to be just as marvelous and she was given the name: Kachina, from the Hoppi language meaning "Spirit Dancer".
She grew into a fabulous mare, like her sire and dam before her she was quick and agile and a top performer in her class. However, at age four her life would take a drastic change. During a reigning performance at a world show, she was destined to out spin herself and rip a tendon in her front leg. It wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it would end her professional career.
After a year of relaxation and easy healing, now five years old, the spotted mare would be bred.. and re bred.. and bred again. But she would not take. A mare who could not be shown and could not be bred was useless on the farm and so she was sold to a young girl around eight years of age and the girl cared for her deeply. The two of them spen many days reliving her old career in the arena where she now lived, Ghostly crowds silently roared for the mare and her little girl. The girl taught her to run barrels and she taught the girl what true confidence and trust was. Life was good.
One day, eight years later, the girl walked slowly out to the pasture where Kachina stood grazing in the evening sun. 'Hey there gorgeous' the girl whispered through tears. The mare nickered softly back to her and rubbed her head against the girl's chest. The girl grabbed her neck and hugged into her and cried and cried. Kachina couldn't understand what was going on, bt she stood still as stone and let the girl cry until she could cry no more. With swollen purple eyes the girl finally looked into the mares eyes. 'A man is supposed to be coming to pick you tomorrow, daddy says you can't come with us because it's too far away. But I don't trust him and he wont be able to pick you up if your not here.' The girl threw a rope across her mare's neck and led her out of the pasture and they walked the tree line of the woods for a very long way. The sun was resting heavily on the horizon and world gleemed orange in the hazy evening light. She slipped the rope off and hugged the mare's face. 'I love you Kachina.' She stood for several moments then suddenly she backed away and yelled 'Now GO. GO KACHINA Get OUT of here!" But her loyal mare just stood and stared, confused by her girl's outrageous behavior. Finally the girl exploded and slapped Kachina across the rump with the metal snap at the end of the lead. "GO" the girl roared and sobbed, and with that the red mare exploded into a frenzied gallop. She ran and ran. With the setting sun came nightfall and the big moon lit a ghostly path. She continued to run until her legs trembled beneath her and she collapsed next to a gentle rolling river just as the sun began to hover over a pink and purple horizon. There she laid, under the same sun she stood under happily only hours before, but now a world away and lost and lonely.
