Their History:
Karlan Stables. It was a name remembered by any who lived in there, and those who passed through. Their horses were top notch dressage winners, and their office was lined with beautiful trophies of different shapes and sizes. The horses were pampered and well cared for, so much so that many would not even know that any other life could exist. Two horses, one more than the other, felt that the world revolved around Karlan Stables and the humans and horses that resided there. Apollo was an arrogant stallion. His life was seemingly perfect, and the humans always kept him in near mint condition. He won trophies, he covered mares so the humans could have championship bloodlines, and he spent the rest of his time eating and sleeping. Life was good, and he spent most of his days next to Kairos, a fellow stallion who was born within the same month as Apollo.
Time went on, and although the two stallions greatly differed in personality they meshed better than some who were alike. Apollo, being stuck up, needed someone to keep him balanced, and Kairos was just that stallion. His laid back and placid demeanor really mellowed out the dramatic bay, and soon they found sync with one another. They were attached at the hip, unless they went for competitions. At one time that almost changed.
After a while, the stables began to lose its prestige. The owners attempted to boost their horses with medications that sped up their growth and gave them a great amount of strength. Although they won most of the competitions, they were still unhappy with the results. Although Apollo and Kairos were not touched by the shining needles, they watched as their fellow stable mates began to change. They grew exceedingly large in bulk, their anger almost unmanageable, and some even died shortly after the injections. Apollo feared that his flawless body would be marred by the selfish humans, but at the same time wanted more than anything to win. Kairos, being less of a competitor and slightly wiser than the flamboyant Apollo, warned the bay stallion of what would happen if they were to give him what the humans gave the others. He said to consider themselves lucky. Food rations thinned out, and training time had been nearly doubled. Even Apollo and Kairos had a difficult time keeping up with the rigorous schedule.
Eventually, at one of the races that Apollo was entered in, one of his fellow stallions that had entered the same race fell over dead halfway through the track. The autopsy revealed a few different drugs in the bloodstream, and began to investigate the stables to check for any hint of boosting their horses with hormones and steroids. But before the humans would allow any of the men in suits to take their horses away, the began to send off select horses into the woods near the stables. Apollo was the first to get a slap on the rump and with a struggle finally took off into the woods. He stood and waited...and waited...and waited. Apollo could only hope that Kairos would be somewhere nearby, and that he was safe. If there was only one other horse he cared about besides himself, it was his best friend.
A couple of days passed, and still Apollo waited in the nearby woods in hopes of seeing Kairos. Soon, the buckskin hide of Kairos came romping across the field at a great speed, and they had a quick greeting before listening in on the stallions story. Being as his blood was clean of any hormones, the humans attempted to fight to keep him. He was fed well once again, and they doted on him even more than usual. But it was still to no avail, and the animal control were ordered to confiscate the last of their horses, injected and not. Of course the humans would not have that either, and without hesitation they sent Kairos away in the same direction as Apollo in hopes that they would survive.
They wandered for quite a long time--they could not keep count of the days--until they came across Sunshine River. They are still unsure as to how to survive in the wild, and have yet to see the dangers, but Kairos has a positive outlook and tries to keep Apollo in the same mindset. They could only hope that life out here would be at least somewhat bearable.
