Penn used to be happy, she lived in a country home with her mother, brother, and several small children. She was the children’s favorite and constant companion, letting the little ones ride her and pulling older children in a light cart.
Then the father human changed jobs, leaving the house and the ponies. Penn’s mother and brother were bought by a stud farm as they were both purebred Highland ponies of good lines. Penn was not so lucky she was sold to a resort who had horses and ponies for use in the off season. Mostly Penn was used for trail rides which, while tiring were easy work.
One day however Penn and another Horse were rented for a couple hours by a woman and her son. They had said they would stick to the trails but they did not, galloping through the woods, jumping fallen logs. The boy urging little Penn harshly to keep up with the taller horse and when they returned to the stable she was wheezing and sore. Back at work on the trail rides a week later, the wheeze came back when three rides a day became too stressful. The owner of the resort was talking about selling her but Penn had lost a lot of weight so she was put into a pasture to see if she could gain some weight and boost her price.
One night several humans came to the stable with ropes. They were quiet and seemed friendly. They took any horse or pony who didn’t make a fuss including Penn, and loaded them into a truck. The thieves soon found out about Penny’s rasp and rather than attract suspicion by selling a bad horse, turned her loose. Now her breathing doesn’t bother her much since she isn’t carrying weight on her back in the wild and she has wandered to sunshine river.
