History: Sorina was marked from birth, marked to live and grow then die a cruel, horrible death to feed the human's pampered pets. She grew up watching those she loved get taken away from her day after day to never return, knowing she was to one day do the same. After her birth, her mother was sent off to slaughter, leaving the week old filly to fend for herself in the cold, disgusting farm the humans kept them on. Luckily, she found another mare who had just birthed, but whose foal had been trampled to death by panicking horses. The devastated but compassionate mare took Sorina for her own. Shortly after she was weaned though, her second mother was taken away from her for good as well. So she found another. This was how it went for two years. The scarred little filly would jump from foster mother to foster mother and each was taken away to be killed time after time. She was spared only because she was too small to give the humans much profit right now. She knew her time was running out though. As her third birthday approached, she began to panic. All these years, she had dreaded the fate that was hers, but had never thought of how she could escape. Now, as Sorina's time drew near, she began to plot every spare moment. Her answer came in a dangerous and risky endeavor. From watching how things worked around the illegal ranch, she knew that after the horses marked to be killed had been moved into a separate corral, they were herded over open land to a hidden loading area where hundreds of trailers were located. If she could manage to break away from that herd, and avoid the bullets the men shot at her when she ran away, she just might be able to escape.
The day she had set to put her plan into effect came closer and closer. Sorina hadn't dared tell anyone her plan, though. It was too dangerous, and though she wished for nothing else than to see all the family she had here free, dying out in the desert from a shot to the heart sounded much more painful than what they were already set to face.
Judgement Day. That was what the brave young filly had dubbed today. The day she would run..and hopefully escape. As the humans came to herd away the horses marked to die this week, Sorina slipped in, trying her best to remain hidden and not let the men see her unmarked hide. Several of her young friends cried desperately out to her, not knowing Sorina's plan or that she had voluntarily joined the herd leaving. She glanced back, giving all of them a stern but loving look as she slipped into the separate corral. One of her youngest friends, Malkilia (or Liki as everyone fondly called her), tried to follow her One of the men shoved her back, but she pressed forward, desperate to stay with Sorina, who had acted like her stand-in mother. To Sorina's despair the man let her join them with a heartless laugh, no doubt thinking the little filly was too stupid to know she was joining the crowd being shipped off to die.
Once in the corral, Sorina ducked and dodged around the panicky horses, who thrashed wildly about the pen, desperate to escape their fate. Finally, after a few awful minutes where Sorina feared Liki would get trampled, the piebald filly found the younger one huddled up in the corner sobbing. Sorina hushed her angrily, then scolded her for following her in here. Afterwards, she quietly explained her plan. Liki's eyes widened in surprise. Escape? The word was almost foreign to her. No one ever tried to escape! But today, they both would try. The men in the roaring beasts came. They stunk and laughed loudly then threw empty bottles at them that crashed over their heads and on the ground, knocking a few older horses to their knees and giving everyone else gashes on their legs and the bottom of their hooves, making it extremely painful to even walk. No wonder no one ever tried to escape. The awful humans made sure it hurt too much to even try. But regardless, they still would. Sorina couldn't come this far without stopping.
Then it came. The moment of escape. Sorina nipped Liki roughly. Now! she urged. They took off. After two seconds, she heard one of the human's loud metal beast come roaring after them then the first shot whiz through the air. Sorina's words of warning to her young friend came a second too late. The red filly crashed to the ground, blood pouring from a gaping wound in her head. Time seemed to slow as she skidded to a stop a few feet away from Liki. She struggled to look up at her stand-in mother. As her last breathe faded away, the wind carried her last whisper to Sorina's ears. Run. Another shot broke her away from her reverie, and as she turned to obey her little friend's last words, it caught her in the chest. She gasped in shock, but ran any way. She ran and ran and ran until her feet were numb and raw from the cuts they had received, her chest was slick with her own blood and her head was dizzy from lack of it. The men had finally given up the chase, but Liki's broken and bloody body still haunted Sorina's memory. It always would. Her bullet wound eventually healed over, leaving an ugly apple sized scar on her chest, but otherwise she was fine physically, for now. Once she thought she was thoroughly safe, she found a place to spend the next year. Her hooves healed as well, though she has a slight limp in one of them. Two years passed in solitude for the filly turned mare before she realized she had to move on, though emotionally, she never would. Every night she had the same nightmare. Every night she would replay it in her head, wishing it had been her, wishing Liki hadn't died...and that she could have saved her. She lives in pain, mourning what she's lost and wishing she could have it again. Her only hope is to start again, as much as she can, and Suneshine River seems like the perfect place...or is it?
