Antoinette was born with only a mother's warmth to comfort her. There was no herd to protect the silent foal. In a result of a terrible encounter with a wild animal, the dam was slaughtered, and Antoinette left with a mere scar on her right wither. She never saw other horses, but luckily, a deer took Antoinette in as her own and fed her with her own milk for a while. After that, she wandered the woods for a few years, barely surviving off of the forest food which she hated to eat. She was so young when her mother was slaughtered, so she had never been taught to graze, she never even noticed her mother doing so. She had to force herself to eat the coarse food in order to live, but doesn't like it at all. She prefers the rare berry or apple that resembles her mother's milk at least in sweetness. She had never seen another horse, other than her mother and was terribly frightened when she first saw one in Sunshine River. Being isolated, as she was, she has very bad manners and can be rude sometimes, though unintentionally. Antoinette resembles a young foal in her behavior and is naive in many things. She needs a mare to teach her the things she does not know; someone who act as the mother Antoinette never had. Without someone to teach her, the young mare may never be able to lead a normal life. It cannot be called normal if you tremble at the approach of another mare, and burst into tears at the sight of a stallion, all in fear of that which you do not understand.
