"You better not say a word," the stallion hissed in her ear. Nineveh obeyed. When she returned to the meadow where the herd was, everyone was surprised. The yearling had scrapes along her sides and a blank look in her eyes. They asked what happened.
She did not say a word.
She did not say that when she had chased the butterfly, she had found her three year old brother among the trees. She did not say how he ignored her cheerful greeting, and instead grabbed her short mane with his teeth. She did not mention the crushing weight on her back, or the confusion. Absalom was her brother... her friend. He was supposed to be nice to her and help her father protect the herd. But why was he hurting her? Nineveh didn't know. She only saw him watching her along with the others, concern written on his body, but a warning in his eyes.
Nineveh never spoke again.
Name: Nazareth

Nazareth never did find out why her sister stopped speaking. But she felt responsible for her, and when Nineveh was stolen by a stallion as a three year old, Nazareth followed, worried that her silent sister would not be able to cope. The stallion already had another mare, but she was so weak-minded that Nazareth quickly took over the lead position. She developed into a no-nonsense, matronly, responsible sort of mare. When this stallion was overthrown by another, she adapted quickly. This new stud wasn't always kind towards Kaara, and she saw him forcebreed a couple fillies when they passed by another herd once, but she overlooked it. Nazareth had learned something in life- it was best to look out for yourself. She watched over Nineveh, and turned a blind eye towards the stallion's misdeeds. Because Nineveh did not speak, Nazareth was very uncertain of whether she willingly bred with the stallion or not. Kaara was too timid to protest; Nazareth figured it was best to just comply, it wasn't difficult; Nineveh merely endured with a blank lack of expression in her eyes. Yes? No? She never did say. So Nazareth was forced to assume she was fine with it.
The three mares raised their foals, were stolen again, raised new foals. Nazareth kept her head down, aiming only to do what was best for Nineveh, Kaara, and herself. The new stallion stepped in a gopher hole and broke his leg; Nazareth and the others left him to die there. And so life goes on.
Name: Kaara
Age: 9 years
Breed: Mustang
Height: 14.3 hh
Color: Buckskin

Kaara was the shy little filly of the herd; she managed to stay in her sire's territory until she was five years old, before he finally drove her out himself, thinking that perhaps some experience out in the world would break her out of her shell. It didn't. All that happened was that Kaara was shunted from one stallion to the next, too afraid to ever protest against anything, always doing exactly as she was told. Soon it just became a habit, and if anyone ever actually asked what she wanted, which was rare, she wasn't able to give an answer, because she didn't know. But she loved her foals; she doted on them, fawned over them, raised them to be wonderful individuals, determined to not produce a failure like herself. And then, soon after the sisters joined, her newest colt was killed in a fight between stallions. It broke her heart; it still lies in pieces at the bottom of her soul. She just follows now, waiting for the day when life decides to leave her behind.
