Amaranth is a dreamer. As a foal, she was so busy gazing at clouds and sniffing flowers that her mother had to remind her to eat, and keep a constant eye on her lest she stray from the herd by accident. She is a sweet and friendly filly, if you can keep her on the same thread of conversation without being distracted. Amaranth didn't make very good friends with the other foals in the herd; she was too boring to play with, too weird, and either her attention span was too short, or far too long, for the others' tastes.
Still, she was quite happy with her life, until the day her mother was stolen by an unknown stallion. Amaranth was left alone, and when trying to find her way back to the herd, she got lost. She was two years old, an age when even "normal" youngsters can be a bit helpless on their own, and she was utterly clueless as to how to manage basic survival.
But as fate would have it, she stumbled into a mare by the lake. The dark chestnut stranger was cranky and irritable, but Amaranth managed to strike up a conversation, and it only took a few minutes of backstory for each to realize that they were in fact half-sisters. Nirvana- for that was the mare- had left her mother in disgust after her beloved father vanished, and since then wandered alone in a self-imposed exile, certain that she was happiest away from others. She was furious that Firedancer had betrayed her father's memory by having a foal by another stallion, but Amaranth was still her sibling, and Nirvana took the lost filly under her wing.
