The First Snow

A fell wind blew across the land, sweeping the last leaves off the apple trees. Grey clouds loomed above. Deep in the orchard, a branch snapped and shattered on the ground. The air felt as though an icy fist was strangling all warmth out of every living being, and the sun fled for southern climes. For a moment, it was quiet, the world waiting with bated breath. And then, a single snowflake. Just one. But it was followed by another, and another, and more and more until the entire skies were filled with a ballet of dancing white puffs.
In the middle of this, the grizzled stallion was standing in amazement. It had been a while since he had seen snow, and he had rather missed it. Summer got too hot. Still, the blue roan had a few worries. Winter was lovely, but it was also deadly to those who didn't watch their step. Kahuna let out a rumbling nicker, making sure not to lose track of his herd in the flurries. His hoof scraped along the ground. Glittering dust puffed around his leg, as snow was already beginning to settle.
Serena heeded his warning and came closer. It was dangerous to lose one another in a snowstorm. The pretty dun glanced backwards at the grullo two year old behind her. he was growing up into a handsome young horse, and would no doubt do well among the humans. It saddened her to think that he would soon be leaving, but she knew that it was where his heart belonged and he was steadfast. Stubborn just as much as his father was.
As though sensing her gaze, Kaino looked up. His striped legs kicked up at the snow, and for a moment he allowed himself to indulge in coltish behavior once more, playing in the fluffy white. Then, he settled back down into his typically keyed-down demeanor. The ribbon in his tail flashed brightly, a constant reminder of his oath to his human friend. The time was growing close; soon, he would have to return, snowstorm or no snowstorm.
