Mercury could not understand why the trees were losing their leaves... Komo had told her that this was perfectly natural, but still she could not understand. At home they had only lost their leaves when upon their final days of life, and now so many leaves were falling.
Her head spun as she trotted between the leaves, Komo bounding slowly beside her, sharing a comfortable silence that friends often did. Occasionally she would stop to look at the trees and the ground to wonder, Komo pausing too. It was a most beautiful place here, he would not deny that, but he had been missing home so sorely of late. That was true beauty to Komo, although he understood that beauty varied and to many the only beautiful place was home.
They came upon the lake, and paused to drink, both in awe, yet confusion at the strangeness of it all.

A stunning champagne mare galloped easily into Gathering Fountain, her creamy mane rippling like a banner behind her. Sharp, black-blue eyes took in her surroundings as she pulled to a skidding stop next to the fountain. Dipping her head to drink from the refreshingly cold water, the Missouri Fox Trotter caught sight of two other horses near her out of the corner of her eye... a mare and stallion.
Cayla snorted in contempt. She had been in the wild since she was ess than a year old, but in the herd she had been in mares were never claimed like objects: they had equal status to, if not higher status than, the stallions in the herd. Terra was never claimed either... oh, for the wandering vagabond life again.
But Cayla was tough, and she had adjusted to typical wild horse life. She still missed her old warrior-spirited herd, but she knew that she was probably never going to find them again and that she might as well suck it up like they'd tell her to if they ever saw her here.
She had been here all through summer, and had met a few other horses, although they were mostly other mares, at the Watering Hole. Rumor was that loners were only allowed to stay overnight once, but she'd stayed there for a week before moving on and out. She didn't care about society's rules... neither had the herd she'd been brought up in.
And now it was the crisp autumn, and she was in unusually high spirits because the irritating heat of the summer was finally wearing off. Cayla had always hated the intense heat, although it had usually been cooler in the land where she had once lived.

OOC: komo is a wallaby, just letting you know. The one in my avatar, to be exact Komo looked up, and was startled to see a mare on the edge of the fountain. Not close, but close enough for komo to be spooked. Unusually so, for Komo was not one to spook. He did not know what it was about the mare, perhaps the way her creamy pelt stood, or the intensity that could be felt through her eyes even from here. He guessed that most likely it was the air she held; an air that told the world that she cared little for authority, little for nature and life and, indeed, none for love. A mare, that surely was the last one that mercury should be mixing with. However, he gauged that the distance that she held was a safe one, and decided it best not to spook mercury. However he did not get the chance to allow peace, for Mercury saw the mare, too, and watched her curiously for a moment. She tipped her head to the left, then to the right, thinking about the mare, and trying to see her heart, her goodness. Unfortunately, Mercury was still but a baby and saw gold in the heart of his mare, and decided to try her horseness on the mare. With out Komo's advice. Trotting a little bolder than what she should, she approached the mare, and watched her from a close distance before walking forward. "hello" was all that she said, for her horseness was still being built, and she did not know how to begin.

[OOC: Oh, okay, nevermind. Let's pretend the stallion and mare Cayla saw were two completely different horses]
The champagne's head jerked up from the frothy fountain water, splashing a bit of it. She hadn't seen this mare before... and what in the world was that godforsaken creature that stood behind her, anxiously watching on?
How odd, she thought to herself as she examined it. Body shape is almost like a rabbit's, but no, it's most definitely not a rabbit.
But, after a moment, she turned her attention back the one that had greeted her. Dark blue eyes narrowed at the small gray mare that approached her... no doubt she was still young and learning, for most horses sensed some of Cayla's martial spirit the moment she was near, and stayed away, for they were lily-livered, peaceful-living horses. But Cayla's patience did not stretch for those who were still learning... her herd had never given any allowance or leeway to their young ones as they were learning.
However, the mare seemed to be polite... so far. "Hello," the mare replied shortly, breaking the silence she had caused while she mused over the strange pair, and promptly continued to drink, although she was no longer thirsty.

Mercury did not know what to do, the mare seemed to have little interest in her, and beyond a simple hello, Mercury was lost. It had not been long since she had started to become what she had called truely horse, and she easily faltered. It seemed that Komo was worried, for he was not beside her as he usually was. Was he trying to tell her something? Or was he simply letting her learn on her own. That was not like Komo, even for Mercury's young age, she knew her best friend's habits down to the letter, and letting Mercury flounder was certainly not what Komo did. Not at all.
A small part of her was seized with terror. Why then would Komo behave like this? But, sadly, it was only a small feeling, not one to send Mercury galloping to the other side of the fountain as she should have done. And since her learnings had began she had become a little more bold, more confident in the fact that she could hold her head proud and belong as horse.
So with a little thought, she announciated what she thought was a rather well planned and excecuted comment to the creamy mare, who was busily drinking at the lake. "my name is mercury, what is yours?" She looked at the mare with interest, surely drinking so much was going to be bad for her, or even for the fountain.

The champagne mare's head snapped up, and yet more water went flying. The way the other talked was strange... almost as if it was all planned out in her head before she even spoke, as if she had to think lots before she spoke.
Perhaps she is retarded, Cayla thought to herself with a snort of laughter, which she didn't bother to hide.
"My name is Cayla," the proud mare replied shortly, and looked back down into the water. She thought, for a moment, about drinking, but promptly decided against it. She was full to bursting with water already.
"What... ah, shall I say, who... is your... ah... friend, there?" she asked, after a moment, nodding towards the strange creature that stood not far away, watching the mare - Mercury, did she say her name was? - a bit anxiously. She had become overwhelmed by curiosity... and hwo could blame her? Not many horses had seen such a creature before.

Mercury looked over at Komo, and only now sensed his anxiety. What was it for? why was her dearest boy Komo ever so scared. As but a young and innocent filly, she failed to notice the sheer evil that the mare possesed. She did not even pick up that the shortness of her speech meant that she did not wish to talk to her any more. Mercury tipped her head sideways, and back again once more. Komo was wise, and he would never desert her for no reason. Nor would he be that anxious.
She did pick up on the fact however, that Komo was not going to talk, so she would have to on his behalf "what is a god- fore- sak-eyen? Komo is a rock wallaby, my firend and protector" Rather innocently she asked the mare "do you have a protector?". Mercury looked at Komo once more, and realised that he was shaking his head, why so did she have no protector, or was he trying to tell her something else?

The Missouri Fox Trotter burst out with a snort of laughter. Clearly this filly had been living with her mind on another planet while she had been growing up... she didn't really seem like she was getting Cayla's hints to go away.
"Godforsaken," she said, her dark blue eyes rather cold, "is an adjective, young lady." However, at the young one's next words, a clear expression of surprise and skepticism cave over her face.
"So he... protects you," the champagne mare said flatly, after a moment. She eyed the strange creature, and noted his oddly shaped legs were actually quite muscles, and could probably give a good kick. The very thought of it sent a shiver, much like the thrill of battle, through her veins, and once again she wanted to be rearing, screaming, alongside her warrior kin, in the heat of a squabble. It sent a grin spinning across her face, although she knew she never would again. Just imagining it would have to do for the rest of her life, and at that thought, the smile slipped off her face.
