Time, what does it really mean? Does it have a beginning and an end truly? What about Life? Is there an end to a truly unique soal? Good and Evil struggle through time and life, a truly epic battle. But in the end, niether should really win.
Chapter One:
The plains are not the most pleasant place to live during the suimmer, but the horses have lived there for centuries. The herds were proof that life could exist in this harsh environment. On such herd was rather small, the lead stallion barely more than four years old. But it was his first filly that caused the other stallions to leave him alone. A seer, they called her, a prophetess of foreboding doom. The little red filly wtih the white markings was named Nightingale and she spoke of a black colt, a curse, and the Dark Herds. Over time, she was dismissed as a fool and the small herd was shunned.
Over the course of the next year, a stallion named Dark had gathered the largest herd that they plains had ever seen. Being a strong stallion, many mares wanted his protection and his foals. His lead mare, Light, had recently foaled a black colt that resembled his sire strongly. The foal was named Cryptic by his sire, as was the custom in those days. But Dark never explained why he named his son such a sinister name. But little Cryptic was a good foal, he listened to his parents and played with the rest of the foals of the large herd. His color deepened to a rich obsidian as he grew, but his thoughts began to grow dark as well. He tried to take the mares, tried to take on the larger bachelor stallions, and taunted his sire.
Dark could not take it any longer, his son was becoming a menace. With the ease of a lead stallion, he approached his now three year old son,
" Son, it is time to find your way in the world. Join the bachelor herd until you find a herd of your own." Dark's voice was cold to his son for the first time. Cryptic nodded and turned, trotted away from his father and his herd. Joining the bachelor band was easy., most of them were his friends. For the next two years, Cryptic ran with the,, the undisputed to stallion of that band. But it was time to find a herd now. Time to test his hooves in real battle. But not just any herd would do, he wanted Dark's Herd.
Approaching the strong lead stallion, Cryptic bowed his head in mockery,
"You alone, Dark, are the undisputed herd sire of this herd, but I am the strongest bachelor and I will take what I want, Father." His voice was as cold as the last day that his father had spoken to him.
Dark drew himself up, looking down at his nose at his older and stronger son,
"The pain that you will feel will never cloud your dark heart. A curse has been placed on you and your bloodline. Unending life and unforgettable pain until you remember who you are. Though your body may fail you, another your soul will find. Direct lineage is your curse and life, but there is a way to end it, end your line." The older stallion's voice was cold, almost flowing straight through his black hearted son.
Cryptic laughed and lunged at his father.Though the battle was quick, it was brutal. Dak lay, bleeding heavily, on the plains with Cryptic standing over himi triumphantly. Blood frothed from Dark's muzzle as he raised his head to his traitorous son,
" Immortality until your line is no more." His voice was scarcely more than a whisper as he cursed his dark son. Cryptic snorted, shaking his head. The old stallion was talking crazy again. Lifting his head towards the rest of the herd, he called loudly, a stallion's scream of claiming and defiance. None stepped up to challen the cursed son of Dark. Light hung her head in shame and pain as her son took over the herd.
The following spring, Light gave birth to Dark's last foal. A lovely golden palomino with a white heart shaped star on her forehead. Named Corazon, she became close to Cryptic. He protected the lovely filly and she followed him everywhere. Later that year is when Cryptic's and Corazon's life would change. Light had vanished one night. No predators had been around and no hoofprints marked her departure. There was talk among the mares that Dark rose and claimed Light once more. Something inside Cryptic snalled as the mares spoke of his fallen sire. He began threatening the mares if they spoke of Dark or Light. He began forcing h is way through the herd for the best of the grazing and he began taking the mares forcefully during the spring breeding season, even if he had already bred them once. But he still protected Corazon and coddled her like his own daughter.
Soon the mares grew used to his threars and tolerated his forced breeding. They no longer cared what he did other than that he protected them from the predators, but Cryptic had a plan. The bachelor stallions, those without a herd of their own. he made friends with them, offered them mares and land, whatever they could want, if they joined his head and kept the mares in line by any means possible. At first, the bachelors were hesitant, more apt to overthrow him, until he made an example of his power. A rank bachelo named Temor tried to steal Corazon, but his flight was stopped by Cryptic. As the other bachelors watched, Cryptic overpowered Temor and killed him slowly, breaking bones that would never heal. A newfound confidence won over the bachelor herd of ten strong stallions. They did as Cryptic asked from the moment that Temor died. But none touched Corazon.
