This mare was shipped to an auction in Nevada late last year. She was bought by a meat buyer, along with her foal. When a volunteer horse rescue worker saw her, it was the mare and FOUR foals alone in a deeply muddy pen. Horses rarely have twins, and being they were all slightly different ages, the gal knew that the mothers of the other three had already been shipped off to slaughter, leaving three hungry orphans behind. Usually mares do not tollerate any other babies nearby when she is tending her foal. This mare however felt the need to feed them all, and was making them take turns nursing. She was bought from the kill buyer along with the three orphans. Thanks to people stepping in, she was eventually shipped to a horse rescue ranch and along with a lot of foal milk replacer fed from buckets, those four babies have grown into yearlings and have been placed in loving homes. This struck me as such an oddity, and a tribute to the mare that had the ability to realize that those orphans were alone, and needed to eat, and she encouraged them all to do so. It really saved their lives.
