Firedancer gave her love a suspicious look, but let it be. Instead, she yawned. This was weird enough; once upon a time, she had been unruly and playful, but now she was the sedentary mother. I can be a mother and have fun at the same time, she thought defiantly. She tossed her mane and loped through the trees, weaving in and out and startling birds. It felt good to stretch her legs and just go. Nirvana immediately ceased pestering Joker and looked up. This mule was, frankly, even more boring than mum and dad. They grazed; he slept. And blew on her; not fun. She gave her father a curious look at his call, and a mischievous glint came into her eye. With a loud squeal, she came barreling after her mother, bucking and cavorting happily. On the second lap through the trees, she had only caught up a little bit to Firedancer, and slowed down breathlessly. As she trotted towards Patriot, she was for all appearances an innocent winded little filly. But then, striking as rapidly as a snake, she lunged forward, nipped her father, and galloped off again, bucking with glee.

Patriot's ears snapped to attention at Firedancer's sudden movement. What had gotten into her? He watched quietly as she cavorted through the forest before his gaze was drawn to Nirvana who suddenly squealed and then ran away from the elderly mule and took off after her fiery mother. For a few moments, the two of them were the only ones involved in the game, but then his little filly, who had breathlessly moved over to him as if seeking some rest, suddenly struck and then ran, bucking as she went. A grin stretched across his black face and he joyfully cried "Oh no you don't!" and took after the little ball of energy, not pushing his muscles to their capacity, but still excercizing them. Oh, how wonderful this day had been! The black stallion had not played like this since he was a yearling. And he hadn't ever seen Firedancer play like this. He was sure she had at some point in her life, he just wasn't there to witness it. He allowed the filly to head him for a little while before easily sprinting up next to her side and giving it a little push. Then, drawing on the speed of his ancestors, the dark stallion dashed forward, quickly drawing alongside his love.

Firedancer noticed a flicker of motion out of the corner of her eye. So Patriot dared challenge her? She tossed her mane and lengthened, streaking close to the ground. He had more high-powered, explosive sprints than her since he was a full-blooded Quarter horse, but her little bit of Thoroughbred gave her additional stamina, so that her sprints could last longer. Quite suddenly, she burst out laughing. She hadn't run like this since she first escaped from that miserable little pen.
Behind them, Nirvana slowed down and stopped. They weren't allowed to beat her. It was against the rules. She pouted for a minute, and turned in the other direction. Sudden, she had an idea. With a flick of her tail, she trotted towards the other end of the long loop her parents were running, and ran in the opposite direction. Then, as soon as she saw them coming through the trees, she could turn around and gallop off, and she would still be winning. The filly's eyes were bright with pride at this ingenious idea.

Patriot had to admit it - he was not in nearly as good of shape as he had been before he had arrived here at Sunshine River. Clearly he had been rather lazy over the past year and a half. Sure, he had done some running and a bit of walking, but not nearly as much as he used to back in Nevada. His breathing started to become labored and all he could think was that being a bit more active definitely needed to be a goal of his. What mare would want to go home with such an unfit stallion? How did he expect to protect them should he need to? Trying not to dwell on that question, he pushed himself a little harder, trying very hard to keep up with his fiery love who was quickly moving ahead of him; her long legs pulling her along at an astonishing speed. That was when he saw it ahead of them, a little flash of chocolate fur. What was Nirvana doing?

Firedancer sprinted onward, the wind slipping through her mane and tail, exhilaration running through her veins. She was leaving Patriot behind; victory was within her grasp. Since when was it a race? She laughed out loud. Quite suddenly, a dark blur appeared directly in front of her. She swerved, just barely grazing the thing, and came to a skidding halt. Nirvana had fallen over from her mother's bump, and sat blinking in the grass. "Nirvana!" scolded the mare. "Dear, don't ever do that; you could hurt yourself, or someone else. Your father and I are several times your size, never forget-- other foals your age, maybe, and little damage would be done; but if one of us collided with you..."[/b] she trailed off warningly.

(OOC: Sorry, really short and really bad post...)
Dirt and gravel flew through the air as Patriot skidded to a stop, throwing in a rear at the end so as to slow his momentum. He walked over to the fallen form of his daughter, head lowered in an attempt to avoid eye contact with Firedancer. The black stallion had seen Nirvana moving toward them, but hadn't bothered to mention her presence and, quite frankly, he had no wish to share in Nirvana's telling-off. Gently, he nuzzled the form of the foal, trying to push her to her feet.

ooc: If you have no muse, I can always take them to foal fields until your magic writing thoughts build up again.
Nirvana twitched her ears, standing up decisively. She sniffed at her mother, stuck out her tongue, and trotted to stand behind Patriot. She had absolutely no interest in appeasing mama now, not after being told off for her brilliant idea. Firedancer gave her a warning look, and then glanced at Patriot. "You shouldn't encourage her, you now," she said wearily. "She might be your princess, but every princess grows up to be a queen. And selfish, rude queens are the ones who end up getting exiled or beheaded." The mare was being a little bit extreme, but her own mother had been tough on manners and obedience, and so was she.

(OOC: If that's what you'd like to do, be my guest. My Patriot muse is running a bit low right now.)
Patriot flinched away from Firedancer's cruel words, somewhat stung by the harshness of them. So he had kept the warning to himself, but that did not warrant a scolding. 'She's just upset and thus is overreacting. Don't bite back.' he warned himself. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, calming himself. "I apologize. I didn't mean to... to anger you," the black stallion started, still unsure of what to say. "She won't be selfish - I won't let that happen. But, after a fall like that, I think she deserves a bit of sympathy." The dark stallion scanned Firedancer's eyes, waiting for a sign of hostility. "I think that maybe the two of you need a bit of, you know, bonding time. Surely there's a place around here made for mares and there foals?"

Firedancer shrugged. "I'm sure there is, by the mare lake no doubt, somewhere around there. Makes most sense. Guess I will then." She sighed. Nirvana was extremely frustrating. She had simply bounced up and trotted off to her father. Firedancer loved him, but their daughter was hardly a day old and already he coddled her. Perhaps she had been harsh; but she was too proud to admit it. Of her many faults, pride was one of the foremost. "Come then, Nirvana," she called to the sulking filly, "We're going on an adventure. Oi you, don't go too far!" Her daughter was flouncing off, the thought of going on an adventure too grand to resist, in utter disregard to the direction her mother was headed. She did a 180˚ turn and sprinted ahead of Firedancer, this time going the right way. "We'll be back soon," said Firedancer, before heading off after the rambunctious filly.

Patriot watched the two as they went; spritely filly bouncing ahead of her mother the entire time. Firedancer's muscles were tense, giving away her obvious frustration. The black stallion felt that the two needed some bonding time. Maybe later, he would take Nirvana for his fiery mate again and allow her some time to gather her wits, but for now, the two needed each other.
Snorting, he turned away from the two retreating forms and cast his eyes over the rest of his territory - at least, the parts he could see. The apple blossoms were thick on the trees - soon, they would fall from their birthplaces, only to bring the new life of apples. Summer was Patriot's favorite time of year and he could feel it coming. Before he knew it, the apples would have started to ripen and then they would fall as Summer drew to an end. Like the curtain falling after a play. Feeling another burst of obnoxious energy -he could swear it was contagious- the Quarter Horse launched into a rear, gave a loud whinny and took off through the trees, buffing up his impressive muscles and arching his neck as he went. Oh, how good it felt to be free!

After expending the last of his spare energy, Patriot set to grazing some more. He hardly needed to eat any more today, but it seemed like the appropriate thing to do while he waited. And thus he picked a nice shady spot beneath a large apple tree as his grazing spot. For a good twenty minutes he nibbled at the grass, but soon the effect of a full stomach and a warm climate took its toll and he dozed off.
A few hours later, he was shaken from sleep by the annoying buzzing of flies in his ears. He shook his head, warding them off for a few moments and gazed out across the grass. He had galloped out of range of Joker, the elderly mule, so he couldn't check on his status. For the moment, though, that really didn't matter at the moment - the black stallion had no mares to protect. How were Firedancer and Nirvana fairing, he wondered?

Joker awoke, the hot sun that had beat on her elderly hide was gone, and in it's place, were thousands of stars. He had slept long. Slowly and feebly he got to his feet and stood underneath the sky. What had happened since he's fallen asleep? Surely nothing much. He yawned, stretched a bit, then turned his head to look around. Everything was quiet and still. Too quiet... What was going to happen next? If he had been a younger mule, he'd have cared more, but with his life lived, it didn't matter so much.

After wandering around his territory, investigating every blade of grass and twig on every tree -or so it seemed- Patriot arrived back at the little clearing in which Nirvana had been born. The sun had set and the stars twinkled up above. A nervous feeling was in his stomach, but he shook it off. Of course they were safe - he was just being a worry wart. Letting his tired lead mare and newborn foal out of his sight was a freaky experience, but he was the one that had suggested it. 'Let them have some breathing room,' he thought to himself. Surely they needed a bit of a break.
The grizzled form of old Joker the mule drew into sight as the black stallion moseyed on into the clearing. He froze for a bit, eyeing the mule. Patriot's black hide seemed to melt into the shadows of the summer trees as he stood watching the other equine and waiting for it to notice him. The ebony stallion still wasn't quite sure what the mule was doing in Sunshine River, but unless Joker cared to tell the story, Patriot wouldn't ask.
